Field day

We had a great time on field day! The students played fun games. They enjoyed relay races, tug of war and balloon toss just to name a few!

Our volunteers were awesome! We are so lucky to have such great parents that take their time to make Wixom a great place to be!

Week of May 29-June 3

Dear parents, 

Today we released our butterflies, we were able to hold them before we let them go. We held them and noticed all the colors they had, their legs, antennae and proboscis.

This week in writing we read the boom Duck for President. In the story Duck runs for president. Then we had a tug of war and we had to decide if Duck should or should not be president. Last we wrote out our reasons for or against duck!

In math we have introduce two-digit addition. We will have a homelink on Thursday night.

In reading, we will read the book The Pigeon Needs a Bath. We will explore the way Mo Willems wrote this story and try some of this writing techniques.

Field day is Friday! We will be outside most of the day. Please wear sunscreen and bring a water bottle!

Also wear your field day shirt!

Tuesday, June 7 is Insect day! Thursday, June 9 is our field trip to the library.

May 16-20

Dear parents, 

This week in First Grade we are anxiously waiting for our caterpillars to go into the pupa stage of their lifecycle. We have learned that our caterpillars spend about two weeks in the larva stage before becoming pupae or going into chrysalises. We also have had our milkweed eggs hatch, these insects will go through several nymph stages before becoming adults. We have observed our first Mealworm turn from a pupa into an adult darkling beetle! Whew! It's been very exciting! 

In math we are nearing the end of unit 8. We worked on data collection and bar graphs, we wrote questions that we could answer with our graph. We have a few more lessons before we will be ready for the unit test early next week.

In writing, we have begun a new unit on Opinion Writing, we have started by reading Duck! Rabbit! The students had to choose whether the animal in the book was a duck or a rabbit. They had to give specific reasons to back up their claim. Today we will learn how good option writing is written. I will introduce a rubric to help them with writing opinion pieces.

In reading, I am continuing my end of year assessments during daily five, please read at home each day with your child to keep their skills sharp! 

Field trip note went home yesterday, we can have a lot of chaperones this time, let me know if you're interested in joining us!

Week of May 9-13

We had a great time at the Walled Lake Outdoor Center! We learned so much about insects, spiders, bees, soil and camouflage. The students enjoyed being outside and spending time with the teachers at the outdoor center!

April 18-22

Dear parents, 

This week in first grade we have been reading and writing more non-fiction books. We have learned more features of non-fiction such as glossary, index and diagrams. We explored non-fiction texts with these features. We read the book Sharks and the book Raptors. 

In writing we have worked on adding "fancy" words. We learned a strategy for writing longer words. First we clap the word, then we stretch out all the parts writing one part at a time. We also have reread our books and decided where we can add or take out parts. We put a table of contents in our books. 

In math, we have wrapped up Unit 7. We reviewed time to the hour on a digital and analog clock. We have started unit 8, geometry. A family letter came home this week. We will learn the attributes of polygons, we will begin to learn halves and fourths next week. 

Science has been exciting this week. We have learned that mealworms need 4 things to survive. We have learned mealworms start as an egg and when they are born they are in the larva stage. We are waiting for them to change into pupae. We do not know what our mealworms will be as adults and are keeping this a secret until they are full grown adults. 

If you have not turned it your child's field trip money it is due on May 2.

Week of April 11-15

Dear parents, 

Welcome back from a snowy week off for Spring Break! I'm hoping the weather begins to look more like spring and soon!

This week we have started a new non-fiction unit of writing and reading. In reading we have read two nonfiction books this week, Our Stars and A Frog Grows and Changes. We have learned two features of non-fiction books. We learned headings and captions, and we looked for them on our own books during daily 5. We will learn about labels and key words tomorrow and Friday. 

In writing we are have made lists of things we are experts on. We began writing "teaching books." We practiced using a teaching voice when we read our books. We also learned how to plan out the facts using our fingers and saying 4 facts we know about a topic, then we began writing. The books have been fun to write and first graders love non- fiction.

In math we have learned What's my Rule? This is another way to practice adding and subtracting and it is about finding patterns in math. We will also work this week on telling time on digital clocks.

Science is starting soon, we have begun talking about what we know about insects and generated questions about what we want to learn, or what were wondering. Our first insects will arrive any day this week!

A field trip permission slip went home yesterday, we will go to the outdoor center on May 9!

Week of March 14-18

Dear parents,

Spring has begun here in Michigan! With the warm weather and rain we have been seeing lots of mud outside on the playground. Please continue to send your child with the appropriate outdoor clothes as temperatures go up and down this month.

In reading this week we have been continuing to read Realistic Fiction books. We read the book Charlie Anderson. In the story we meet a cat who has two different owners. We discussed how the cat went back and forth between houses. Some students felt the families should keep the cat only for themselves (finders keepers) and some thought the first owners should have the cat solely. This brought up some great ideas about stealing and fairness.

In writing, we have been working on how to begin our stories with Setting the scene or with action!
We have read several books that begin with description and help us visualize the story. We have also read books that have a lot of action. We talked about how writers "hook" the reader with different beginnings. We have begun to revise our stories to make them better. Next week we will pick one story to publish!

In math this week we wrapped up Unit 6. We had two tests, unit test and a cumulative test. We will begin Unit 7 tomorrow. A family letter will come home today.

In Social Studies, we are continuing learning about Earning and Spending. We have discussed Goods and Services. We will learn about Opportunity Costs and Scarcity. We read the book Alexander who Used to Rich Last Sunday. We discussed wants versus needs.

We are getting ready to think about Science again, Our unit on Insects will begin after Spring Break!

There is no school on March 25th, due to Good Friday.
