Dear families,
Hello, we are getting so close to our winter break! I can't believe we are almost to a brand new year, 2018 - it doesn't seem possible!
In reading this week we have been continuing on with reading non-fiction. We read several Time for Kids articles. We have been noticing non-fiction features such as: headings, labels, diagrams, index, glossary, captions, and photos. In reading we have been previewing books to and anticipating what we think the book may be trying to teach us.
In phonics we have been working on root words, prefixes and suffixes. Yesterday we learned how to add -ies and -ied to words that end in y. We will learn after the break about silent letters "kn" and "ph."
In writing, we have been working on writing non-fiction lab reports. We made ramps last week and we predicted how far objects would go down them. We wrote procedures and then tested out hypothesis.
Then we wrote conclusions to our findings. We watched a video about force and motion. We learned two new science words: friction and inertia.
In math, we have begun a unit 4. The unit three math tests will stay in your child's file. I will share the unit 3 test when we have conferences (date to be determined). Unit 4 is about place value, time and money.
In Science last week we made kites and took them to the cafeteria to see if we could make them fly. We also measured the snow fall in our rain gauge. We noticed the gauge was full of snow, but after melting it only measured 1/2 inch of water. The students were quick to point out that there was air between the snow flakes making it full! We will continue to learn more about the weather into January.
We are excited for our field trip tomorrow! We will depart from Wixom Elementary at 9:30 a.m. we will ride the bus to the Northville Marquis Theater. After the play we will come back to school. The afternoon will follow our normal schedule with block recess.
On Thursday at 2:00 p.m. we will have our Holiday Party. The students will play some minute to win it games, make and eat ice cream sundaes and make a fun craft!

Week of December 4-8
Hello families,
This week in second grade we have begun a new non-fiction reading and writing unit. We read the book Tuesday Tucks Me In. It is the memoir of a disabled veteran and his service dog named Tuesday. We learned how service dogs help people with disabilities. We also read an article and learned even more about how dogs are trained as rescue dogs and how other animals help people as well.
Today we shared our realistic fiction stories with Kindergartners. The students were so happy to show off their writing!
We have started a new unit of non-fiction writing this week. We did a class experiment with a car on a ramp. We learned how to write lab reports. We started with asking a question, then we wrote a hypothesis, next we wrote step by step procedures and last we wrote a conclusion.
We will practice this type of writing and begin to explore other types of non-fiction writing in the next few weeks.
In math, we have reached the end of unit 3. We had our unit 3 math test today. This unit was all about strategies for subtraction, fact families and rules for subtraction.
We will begin math unit 4 on Monday. A family letter will be sent home detailing what students will be learning.
In science, we have worked on learning more about air and how it moves things. We began learning about weather and the changing seasons. We made pinwheels on Thursday and tested them in the wind. As a class we made an anometer to measure the wind, we read about weather balloons. We put a rain gauge outside to measure precipitation over the several days.
We will wrap up this unit on science next week.
Parent teacher conferences are next week on Thursday, December 14th. It is also a half day for students. Students will be dismissed at 11:10 a.m.
Please remember to send mittens and a hat with your child! It is cold outside. Sending an extra pair of mittens is a good idea. Sometimes mittens get wet at recess and then they go outside again for block recess.

Week of November 27-December1
Wow, I cannot believe it is already December!
This week in Second grade we have been wrapping up our Realistic Fiction unit in reading and writing. We read the book Each Kindness. We discussed empathy and had a discussion about treating others with kindness. We also read the story Those Darn Squirrels Fly South, we enjoyed talking about the book and noticed the squirrels having empathy for the main character in the story.
In phonics, we worked on words with the double vowel "oo" and learned that it can sound like moon or like look. We also practiced sort words by the ending and worked on the long i.
In writing, we have worked on editing out realistic fiction stories to share with kindergarten buddies next week. We reviewed editing for punctuation, capitalization and spelling of word wall words. We added an "About the Author" page and today we will add a blurb or "sneak peek." Next week we will begin a new unit of reading and writing on Non-Fiction. We will begin with an assessment of what students already know about writing non-fiction from last year.
In math, we are headed toward the end of unit 3. We have worked all week on subtraction strategies. We learned to use a doubles fact to help subtract, going through 10 first, counting on and counting back.
In science we did two experiments with air involving compression of air and air pressure. We have also worked on the weather. We read about different types of clouds and made a poster showing the ways clouds look. We will finish up the air portion of the unit today by making Balloon Rockets! We will continue to work with weather the rest of this month.
As colder weather is coming, please send the necessary winter clothing for your child. Mittens, hats and a warm coat are now needed!
Lastly, the field trip for December 20th is coming up! If you have not paid for your child ($13.00), or yourself if you are chaperoning , please send in money and permission slip as soon as possible.

November 13-17
Hello families!
We read the books Paperboy by Dave Pilkey and A Chair for my Mother by Vera B. Williams this week. Both books are good examples of realistic fiction. We read the books to look for the features of realistic fiction and to discuss the idea of empathy. Using the carefully chosen words in the Paperboy we tried to imagine a cold, dark morning getting out of a snuggly, warm bed to go deliver papers while the rest of our family slept! We tried to imagine how we would feel if all the things we liked were destroyed in a house fire, like the characters in A Chair for my Mother.
We worked on our Realistic Fiction stories in writing. We practiced different ways to start our stories with action, talking or "setting a scene." Our writing has really taken off in this unit. Students are spending more time on one piece instead of writing many short pieces as we did in our Small Moments unit.
For phonics this week we worked on silent e, words ending in y, and onset/rime.
In math we are continuing on in Unit 3. We have been working on addition and subtraction strategies. We learned to play the game "Salute" to practice missing addends. We worked on subtraction number stories and more adding with double ten frames. The Unit 2 math test came home, please sign and return after reviewing with your child.
In science we furthered our exploration of air. We made parachutes and floated them while standing on our chairs. We observed air filling up the paper napkins. We also discussed that the air is on top and all around a parachute as it falls to the ground. We read the book Bubbles float, Bubbles pop! We learned the reasons bubbles pop. Mrs. Scheck handed out bubble gum after the experiment to try making bubbles at home.
Our first field trip note went home on Wednesday. Thank you to the many offers to chaperone our trip. I have enough chaperones for this trip. If you have not sent in money or permission slips, they are due by Friday, December 1st.
Next week is Thanksgiving, therefore there is no school on Thursday the 24th or Friday the 23rd.

October 30-November 3
Hello families,
This week in room 105 we have been enjoying the beginning of a few science unit, wrapping up our Small Moments writing unit, nearing the end of math Unit 2 and working on word endings in phonics.
In reading this week we read the story Those Darn Squirrels and the Cat Next Door. In this story the squirrels and the birds team up to solve a problem together. A cat has moved in next door and he has been ambushing the squirrels and bothering the birds. We learned that characters solve many problems in books. Some common steps to problem solving we discovered were: meeting, planning, carrying out a plan and moving on.
In phonics we worked on suffixes -ed, -s, es. We learned the different ways to make a word plural. We sort the sounds -ed can make at the end of a word.
In writing we worked this week on editing a favorite small moment. We reviewed to put capitals at the start of sentences, periods (question marks, exclamation points) at the end of sentences, use quotation marks for talking, and how to take out or insert words. Our writing has improved so much! We will begin a new unit on Realistic Fiction at the end of next week.
In math we learned name collection boxes, how to play "name that number" and odd and even numbers, writing number models to express odd and even addends.
In science, we worked with air underwater. We predicted what would happen if we pushed a vial into the water and if the paper towel in the water would stay dry. We moved a plastic foam ball under water with the vial. So we've learned air moves things even under water!
We will continue our adventures in learning next week!

Just a few notes from this week...
In reading we read the story Those Darn Squirrels. We discussed the different view points in the story and wrote about them. We learned the vocabulary words: furious and delighted.
In writing, we used powerful and precise words in our small moments. We brainstormed synonyms for mad, happy and sad. We will meet with partners today and work on revising.
In math we have been working on addition and subtraction number stories.
We will begin science today! Our unit on Air and Weather will be fun. We will begin by exploring air. We will start observing and recording the weather.
Our Halloween party is on Tuesday. The parade begins at 10:45, hope to see you there!
