Week of February 23-27
Dear Parents,
This week in First Grade, we are celebrating our 100th day of school! Today we will do some fun 100s day activities such as: writing what we think we will be doing when we turn 100 years old, writing about spending $100.00, coloring a search and find, and thinking of 100 things we've learned in First grade so far!
In reading this week, we have moved on to Non-Fiction books. This week we will read Kangaroo Joey Grows Up. We will write what we think we know and what we wonder about Kangaroo babies and then discuss what surprised us about Kangaroos. Today we learned that readers try to remember what they've read. We will continue to learn non-fiction text features: bold words, captions, real photos, index and table of contents.
In math today we are wrapping up Unit 5. The assessment is today. We will begin Unit 6 on Fact Power tomorrow. We will be learning more strategies to learn addition and subtraction facts. A family letter will come home soon, expect a homelink on Thursday night.
In writing, we are starting a new unit called Authors as Mentors. In this unit we will examine Angela Johnson, Ezra Jack Keats, Donald Crews and Joanne Ryder to see what techniques they use in their writing. We will try out some of their techniques in our own writing.
In social studies, we are learning about goods and services. We will review wants and needs and begin learning about opportunity costs.
Tomorrow is the school Talent Show. The assembly for first grade is in the morning at 9:15. I can't wait to see all the talented students at Wixom perform!
Enjoy some pictures from our Valentines Day Party below!
Have a great week!

Week of February 9-13
Dear Parents,
This week in first grade, we are getting excited for Valentine's Day. Our party is this Friday at 1:30. We will exchange cards, make sundaes and play bingo. Please be sure your child brings in cards for everyone if they wish to give out Valentines.
In writing this week, we are getting ready to publish one of our how To's. We have practiced adding a warning to our writing and putting colons, commas and periods into our writing. We will wrap up this unit after the mid winter break.
In social studies this week, we read the book The Money Tree. We discussed the difference between wants and needs. We came up with needs as: food, shelter and clothing. The students had no problem imagining what their "wants" are!
In math, we have been furthering our fact power. Students have learned how to double a number and use an addition table. We learned a trick for adding doubles plus one and doubles plus two.
We will learn "what's my rule" and wrap up this unit when we return from the break.
The popcorn words this week are: car, arm, farm, star, are, cart. We are focusing on short and long "a" this week. We have begun to notice some words have silent e which helps the vowel say it's name.
Guided reading books are coming home, please be sure and send the book back they next day even if your child doesn't get time to read.
As a reminder, we are off from school next week for February break!
Thank you,
Mrs. Scheck
